First Day
Saturday, 29 September
At 6:15 o’clock in the morning we took off at Berlin-Tegel. It was a very pleasant flight and we landed in London Stansted at 7:35 o’clock. In London we saw the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s Guard and the House of Parliament with Big Ben. I think London is very dirty. In the afternoon we went to Hastings by bus and met our host families. I shared my friendly family with Batuhan and Tarik.
Second Day
Sunday, 30 September
On this day we went to Smugglers Adventure. There were fascinating caves and very dark, tight, subterranean tunnels. Many years ago, smugglers hid their goods in the caves. Now in one cave, there is a ballroom. Then we went to battle abbey and the battlefield, where the Battle of Hastings took place on the 14 October 1066. The small battle abbey was built by William the Conqueror after the battle.
Third Day
Monday, 1 October
That was our first day at school. After school we ate our packed lunch with a bag of ready salted crisps. It tasted quite good. Then we visited the post office and bought postcards and stamps. I bought tea at Oxfam and sweets at Morrisons. We had to work on a questionnaire.
Fourth Day
Tuesday, 2 October
We went to school and I brought the letter for my mum to the letter box.
In the afternoon we went to Underwater World. There were many kinds of fish for example sharks and seahorses and sea stars. Afterwards the teachers allowed us to go shopping in a part of the precinct in groups of 3 or 4 pupils.
Fifth Day
Wednesday, 3 October
At 9 o’clock we went to school again. Then we sat on the beach and ate our picnic. Later we visited the Fisherman’s Museum. It was inside the old Fishermen’s church and showed the maritime history of Hastings. There was a nice, little exhibition with an old fisher boat, boat models and an interesting film about life boats.
Sixth Day
Thursday, 4 October
After school we visited the small Hever Castle. It was the seat of the Boleyn family and built in the 13th century. There was a famous maze and a water maze. Some of us got wet. We had a lot of fun.
Seventh Day
Friday, 5 October
That was the last day at school. Afterwards we went to the ruins of the castle of Hastings. In 1287 violent storms battered the south coast of England for many months and large sections of the soft sandstone cliffs fell into the sea along with parts of the castle. In a tent made out of concrete we saw a film about the Battle of Hastings called ‘The 1066 Story’: The Battle of Hastings took place on 14 October 1066. The French Norman army under the command of Duke Wilhelm won the battle against the Angle-Saxons under King Harold II. It was the first victory of the Norman army in the conquest of England. The location was not far from Hastings. In the afternoon, we went shopping in the precinct. I bought a hot chocolate.
Eighth Day
Saturday, 6 October
We said goodbye to our host family and went to London by bus. We rode in the London Eye. We saw the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, two railway stations and the river Thames. In the evening we flew back to Berlin. Again we had a pleasant flight. Our parents were waiting for us.
